    Curriculum Statement

Physical Education at Stamshaw Junior School

    Intent

Stamshaw Junior School believe that all children should have a desire to strive within Physical Education. All children are given a chance to progress their skills and have opportunities to seek a passion through a variety of sports and inspire them to having a healthy lifestyle. Through competitive sports or other physical activities children will be able to excel and embed our school values of being ‘Reliable, Resourceful, Reflective, Resilient and Respectful’. This will benefit our children to build character and challenge themselves to achieve their best, whether as a team or individual.

    Implementation

PE at Stamshaw Junior School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.

We use Primary PE Planning (PPP) to set out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in high-quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half-term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in a varied range of extracurricular activities. Children can attend after-school sports clubs such as netball, football and multi-sports every week.

Children will be invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop the school values and leadership skills in a different environment and are very much enjoyed by the children.

We are looking into integrating a ‘Sports leader’ aspect into the role of our Year 6 prefects. In this role, children will be able to assist in the management and maintenance of PE equipment.

Children in Year 4 and 6 swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Autumn and Spring Term. This gives them the opportunity to have a deeper understanding whilst growing in confidence with swimming during their time at Stamshaw Junior School.

We provide children with access to a subsidised after-school club to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

    Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
