  • British Values

In Great Britain, we are very lucky to be able to live our lives under a set of values known as 'British Values'.  These four values enable us to live a safe and free life, where we are able to make our own decisions.  Many countries do not have these and their lives are often difficult.  Our four values are:

    Democracy

Democracy is promoted within the school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through the School Council and Pupil Leadership Team. The School Council members are voted for by pupils of each class. Children also learn about democracy through PSHE and the assembly programme.

    The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout school; particularly through the behaviour policy and through the school assemblies. Pupils are encouraged to understand the difference between right and wrong, to know that laws protect us and keep us safe, and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce these messages.

Our high quality PE curriculum promotes the concept of ‘fair play’. It also teaches children to participate in activities, follow and develop rules, celebrate and reward successes yet be gracious in defeat.

    Individual liberty

For individual liberty, we focus on children's self-confidence and self-awareness and people and communities. We help children to develop a positive sense of themselves.

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make positive choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make safe choices; for example, through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and those without faith

Mutual Respect & tolerance: where we learn to treat others as we want to be treated, how to be part of a community, manage our feelings and behaviour and form relationships with others.

We regularly hold assemblies around values and discussions about bullying, as well as learning in RE and PSHE.

Without these values, we would live in a society where we had no freedom of speech; we would not be able to make our own choices; would not be able to have our own religious beliefs and would be assumed guilty of wrongdoing before the facts were considered.
