Stamshaw Junior School Celebrates VE Day Aboard HMS Duncan

On Friday 4th April, children from Stamshaw Junior School were honoured to celebrate VE Day aboard HMS Duncan. Amongst media crews and celebrity guests, the children joined in a traditional 'street' party on the flight deck, enjoying delicious food and drink in great company.

Naval officers and crew members sat alongside the children, sharing stories and answering a flurry of enthusiastic questions. One of the most touching moments of the day was listening to a heartfelt letter from John, a World War II veteran who would now be 100 years old. In response, the children wrote their own letters of thanks, reflecting on John's bravery and service. Representing the school, our very own Lance read his letter aloud to the crowd—an unforgettable and moving moment.

The excitement didn’t end there. The children were given a special guided tour of HMS Duncan, exploring the OPS room to learn how the ship detects and responds to threats. They even got hands-on with some of the equipment used by the Royal Navy.

Their tour concluded on the bridge, where they saw firsthand where Captain Lee commands the ship. With radar screens, communication systems, and navigation controls all around, it was an inspiring experience. The children navigated the ship’s tight corridors and steep stairs with enthusiasm, gaining a real insight into life aboard a Royal Navy vessel.

It was a fantastic experience—one that brought Portsmouth’s proud naval heritage to life and left lasting memories for all involved.
